Interested in spending time outside and meeting other hiking enthusiasts? Weantinoge has organized a series of Trail Work Days for volunteers. Volunteers help ensure our trails are in great condition and provide a safe and enjoyable experience for hikers. Participants join Weantinoge staff and meet at the chosen preserve and work for about 3 hours with hand tools to trim back vegetation, clearing branches off the trail, and improving directional blazes with paint. Join Weantinoge, and noted local Audubon birder Angela Dimmitt, for an early morning bird walk through Weantinoge's 220-acre Smyrski Farm, home to 65 species of birds (and counting). At this time of day the birds will be active with resident birds and migratory songbirds returning to their breeding grounds. Global climate change is changing the abundances, range, and interactions of native as well as invasive species. Dr. Carole Cheah, an entomologist with the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station, will share her extensive body of research on different stressors and their impacts on eastern hemlock health in the context of a rapidly changing climate. The first weekend in June is Connecticut Trails Day, part of a nationally coordinated day celebrating all muscle-powered trail activities!
